‘Musical Conversations’ project produced very successful social meetings encouraging local Communities to socialize over a cuppa or dinner. Programmes focusing on traditional music, dance, songs & storytelling are entertaining rural communities in Maghery & Birches Co. Armagh.
The project provided an opportunity for communities to gain an interest in their locality and develop an appreciation of their place and space. These events provided opportunities for the older generation to socialise with others and many attended the events connected to the project. The programmes enabled communities to become part of live music programme and participate via singing and conversation. The programmes were interactive; the singer narrated a history to the songs which related to the area. People were able to talk about their memory of the places and people mentioned in the songs.
The musical experiences enjoyed by all was equally rewarding for the musicians, young & older. An unintended outcome of Musical Conversations was a fantastic opportunity for the next generation of young music leaders to acquire performance skills and gain experience of audience reaction and appreciation of their music.
